Detroit’s Greektown Casino Reopens with New Barstool Sportsbook

Penn National Gaming is set to debut a Barstool Sportsbook at Greektown Casino Hotel on December 23, 2020, as Detroit’s three casinos were allowed to resume operations after a state-mandated shutdown that lasted more than a month.

Greektown Casino Hotel is located in Downtown Detroit and is one of three brick-and-mortar gambling venues located in that part of the city.

The new Barstool Sportsbook is located on the casino’s second floor, right next to its table games area. Penn National said that it would draw sports fans with a “captivating entryway” and will feature a sports viewing area and dining space, betting counter with large odds boards, a number of sports betting kiosks, and ticket writer stations that will be supporting thousands of wagering options for sports betting customers.

Guests will be offered wagering experience in close proximity to dining and televisions that will broadcast sporting events from around the US and the rest of the world.

When placing bets at the sportsbook, Greektown Casino patrons will also be able to earn tier points and mycash within Penn National’s loyalty program.

The opening of the new Barstool Sportsbook is part of Penn National’s strategy to utilize the Barstool Sports brand across its more than 40 properties around the nation. The casino operator purchased a 36% stake in the digital sports media company earlier this year in a deal that Penn National’s Interactive Head Jon Kaplowitz said would “drive audiences to Penn National’s online gaming products and retail locations.”

Casino Reopening

Penn National’s announcement about the new Barstool Sportsbook came just as the company also prepares to reopen Greektown Casino after it was forced to close the gambling venue more than a month ago as the state was battling a new spike of Covid-19 cases.

Following a shutdown that kicked off in mid-November, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said last week that Detroit’s casinos can resume operations with limited capacity starting Monday. Under a state order that will remain in effect through January 15, the three gambling venues must operate with total capacity of 100 people “within any distinct space within the venue.”

As per the same order, “occupancy is limited to 20 persons per 1,000 square feet, including within any distinct space within the venue.”

Food and beverage facilities within the casinos were ordered to remain closed, while strict social distancing measures must be in place.

Aside from Greektown and its new Barstool Sportsbook, Detroit’s other two casinos will too reopen their existing sports betting facilities. MotorCity Casino hosts a FanDuel Sportsbook, while MGM Grand Detroit features a BetMGM-branded betting facility.

Of their new sportsbook, Greektown Casino Vice President and General Manager John Drake said that they are thrilled to be opening the new facility and that its “design showcases the spirit of the Barstool Sports brand, resulting in an outstanding sports wagering experience that we expect our customers will thoroughly enjoy.”
